Yoga

Yoga ("yoke", "unite", "control", also called "reborn") is in its broad context: a Hindu philosophy that teaches the mind, feel and body control , thereby union with God.

In a more mundane, Western concept of yoga is Hatha yoga to mean a branch of yoga (hatha yoga) which consists of a system of exercises for the body to obtain.

India defines yoga expert Jean Herbert also with two meanings are closely related. His definition is as follows:
"Yoga is the state in which man is yoked with the Divine is, that is connected with the Divine, as expressed in the word religion.
With a small version prints the word yoga is the state from which the 'visible man' is also linked to the 'real man', ie where man has regained his true nature and in accordance with lives.
The yoga technique, how it may be, is a discipline by which man tries to come to the state of yoga. "

The 6th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita (a passage from the Mahabharata, probably from the 3rd century BC.) Is for many the most important text on yoga. In this chapter the hero-warrior Arjuna by his charioteer - who has revealed himself to him as the god Krishna - urged the royal path of yoga to go.
If the standard work on classical yoga, however the Yogasoetra of Patanjali, which elevated levels of yoga technique and, although he mainly dealt with the practice, it gave a metaphysical basis. Yoga, which is theoretically similar to the Samkhya oriented, was now his own 'philosophical orientation' or a darshana.
From the work of Srila Vyasdeva is said that we would allow for the physical condition to leave and go into eternal spiritual existence together with the soul and personality. The work of Srila Vyasadeva is unique in the sense that the reader of his books with information on the personal aspects and qualities of the Lord, which he can rise to the, according to the Vedas, the highest achievement in the practice of spiritual activities.

Buddha is often the Mahayogi, the great Yogi called. Maya teaches an ascending series of meditations and contemplations, the samadhi, the mystical, visionary ecstasy, in which one Nirvana (without forest, that of vana (forest) and is nir (without) experience).
He also wrote Paramahansa Yogananda in Autobiography of a Yogi about the connectedness of the residents to dust Mahavatar Babaji who together worked stoffeloze Jesus Christ to the conversion of the divine plan for the earth in this age. Their mission would be out there, to inspire nations wars, racism, religious sectarianism and materialism to give.
Where Krishna is known as gopi-vandana ', the darling of His servants, who are always somewhere in the forest is located, is the impersonal glow (also called brahma-jyoti), a derivative of awareness regarding the Absolute Person.
The religious aspects of yoga in the form since the seventies in the resulting dialogue between Christian theology and India Studies is an important theme.

The Yogasoetra of Patanjali describe the raja yoga, hatha yoga which is the basis. Traditionally, it keeps four main system of yoga:
Jnana yoga: The yoga of inquiry along the road of the intellect, continued beyond the usual mental limitation
Bhakti yoga: The yoga of love and devotion to the divine made either through a representation of the divine through an object or a person in whom one sees the divine
raja yoga: the yoga of inward concentration
Karma yoga: The yoga of action without attachment and without self-interest. This yoga is more or less oriented to the divine

The eight branches (ashtanga) of raja yoga are described in the second pada of the Yogasoetra's. It concerns the following levels:
Yama refers to the five abstentions
Ahimsa: nonviolence
Satya: truth
Asteya: not steal
Brahmacharya: chastity
Aparigraha: renounce possessions

Shaucha: physical purity
Santosha: source of the supreme joy
Tapas: burning zeal
Svadhyaya: introspection
Ishvarapranidhana: surrender to the worship of Ishvara
Asana: physical exercise
Pranayama: breathing
Pratyahara: withdrawal of the senses
Dharana: concentration

Samadhi: complete surrender / integration
ultimate goal is emancipation kaivalia

Ashtanga Secondary Series

When we talk about Ashtanga Yoga, we get the picture of a ‘eight-limbed’ yoga technique in our mind. This popular yoga form, which has been practiced all over by people, stresses improvement of the breathing and mind through asanas. It is a power yoga practiced in three series, viz. primary, secondary and advanced. .

The secondary series of Ashtanga yoga which is also known as Nadi Shodana, is a nervous system purification series. Through this series, the nervous system is cleansed and the energy is channeled to every part of the body. This series starts after the full completion of the primary Ashtanga series. The series is characterized by sun salutations (Surya namaskar), standing and sitting postures.

Like the Ashtanga yoga series, there is the Yoga Bikram propagated by Bikram Choudhury which is a form of hot yoga striving to develop the body with the inner heat. This yoga form helps in improving overall circulation of blood, controlling mind and reducing stress. Another yoga form Moksha Yoga is also a type of yoga practiced in a warm environment which strives at development of the body, mind and the soul. This yoga practiced through asanas in a heated room helps in detoxifying the toxins from the body and reducing stress.

The Ashtanga secondary yoga classes continue for around 35 minutes. One can also practice this yoga form with the help of yoga videos at home. Nowadays, you can also teach your baby yoga with the help of these videos where they show postures for the small child. However, for comfortable practice of Ashtanga Yoga, it is important for having the right wear. Yoga pants are a must necessary as it makes one comfortable during yoga.

BKS Iyengar Yoga

Hi:) here are some amazing clips of BKS Iyengar when he was still a young man. He puts on quite the exhibition. I love the beginning of the first clip where he stands up with his leg behind his head. If only my hamstrings were a little looser.

He who binds the breath, binds the mind

He who binds the breath, binds the mind. – Svatmarama, Hatha Yoga Pradipika

Yoga works primarily with the energy in the body, through the science of pranayama, or energy-control. Prana means also ‘breath.’ Yoga teaches how, through breath-control, to still the mind and attain higher states of awareness. The higher teachings of yoga take one beyond techniques, and show the yogi, or yoga practitioner, how to direct his concentration in such a way as not only to harmonize human with divine consciousness, but to merge his consciousness in the Infinite. – Paramahansa Yogananda

Right Here, Right Now: Eating Mindfully and Applying Atha to Your Practice – Melina Meza

I’ve been deeply inspired in my daily life by the very first sutra in the classic text called Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The arrangement in which the sutras are placed is related to their significance, so the very first word in the first yoga sutra is central to understanding what Westerners call “yoga.” The whole sutra is atha yoga anusasanam. Atha is translated as now, also referred to as the moment-to-moment transition. This simple word, atha, echoes the basic wisdom often forgotten in today’s society, that in order to feel whole and connected, you must be present. Right here, right now. But, where do we spend most of our life? Somewhere in between the past and future.
I once heard a riddle that asked, “If you had a treasure to hide, where would you hide it?” The answer is, “in the present moment.” What would happen if we started weaving this wisdom from the Yoga Sutra into our daily life and eating? Would our health improve? I believe it would. This first step is perhaps the most important step on this journey because it brings your attention to what you are doing in the moment, no matter what you are doing. How can you ever understand or feel the benefit of a well prepared meal, restorative or vigorous yoga practice, healthy relationships, parenting, working, or whatever you do in life, if you are always distracted with emails and text messaging or if you are busy fantasizing about some time other than right now?
One translation of the word “mindfulness” means to pay attention or take care in every thing you do. Mindfulness and atha have a lot in common, they both remind us that now is the prime time to pay attention to life and take nothing for granted, they both graciously steer the waxing and waning mind towards one goal, one task versus many. After all, can your energy really go more than one place at a time? Mindfulness or atha can be used as a “mantra” to be repeated throughout the day in various activities such as yoga, meditation, walking, cooking, paying the bills, or listening to a friend. Repeating this mantra throughout your day will help remind you to stay present and awake, right here and now. What would it be like to wake up to each moment’s sensual offerings and accept that moment as enough?
Mindful eating
What if eating became a part of your meditation practice? Whether you eat three square meals a day or numerous smaller meals, eating food is something every human must do to survive. To maintain healthy tissues and organs, it’s essential to eat the right foods everyday. Because we all need to eat so regularly, it’s a great place to consider sequencing in mindfulness and atha into your daily routine. Enjoy how your food tastes, smells, how well it digests, and how much you need to satisfy your hunger.
In the western culture, people are not fully conscious of the fact that they are eating; instead we are busy driving, typing at the computer, watching the TV or a movie, reading the paper or discussing politics or the latest Facebook events while hanging out with friends. Each of these scenarios requires a certain amount of energy output–energy that is pulled away from the digestive and metabolic functions occurring within. There is a classic saying, “Where your mind goes, your energy will follow.” So, why not focus on eating when eating, to prepare your digestive organs to process the nutrients?
If we were to apply mindfulness to eating, we would start by choosing a special, clean place to eat each meal, free of clutter and distractions. I believe it is valuable to choose a specific comfortable seat just for eating (like you do for meditation) other than your couch, desk, bed, or car because it promotes conscious eating. This also prevents overeating. Consider the classic conditioned behavior patterns described in Pavlov’s experiment. His research proves just how easily you can train yourself to get hungry every time you approach your desk, couch, or car, if that is where you most commonly eat. Conscious, mindful eating promotes efficient digestion and metabolism, so you’ll have more energy at the end of the day, week, and year to do your life’s work. When you take the same seat over and over again to eat, you’ll remember that eating is a ritual for nourishment rather than a reward or comfort tool.
By eating in a quiet seat, you also give your body the opportunity to stop vibrating from the day, calm the sense organs, indulge in a few deep breaths, and drop into a moment of appreciation for the delicious food you are about to consume. The food you eat, after all, will soon become you, so it would be wise to be attentive to your new guests and pray for a speedy, harmonious transformation in the walls of your GI tract.
